Data Location - Make it easy by separating your data from the start. Many programs just put the data on your Documents folder. It is a better idea to create a DATA sub folder and then sub-folders under that for each type. For example, C:\DATA\Word and C:\DATA\Photoshop, etc.

DVD Backups - Start easy and burn a DVD of your C:\DATA directory every week or so. Buy good DVD-R dvds from a place like NewEgg then download Nero to get started. Follow the easy directions to burn a DVD and save the template for the future. Label each DVD with the date and the 'DATA backup'. If you have a lot of JPG (photo) or MP3 (music) files you can separate them out on their own DVD.

Hot Backups - Buy two 500GB drives and keep your most precious files on both. Set up a folder like D:\BACKUP and copy these files over from the C:\DATA folder as needed. This is manual but can help in case one drive goes bad.

The Cloud - Put it Online - Go to Google and set up an account and you can upload up to 1GB worth of your files to Google Docs for free. Put your precious files here. There are also many other sites that will give free space. Google Docs also gives you the ability to edit online documents and spreadsheets and to have multiple people use them at the same time.  It's a great way to share documents and spreadsheets.  Here is a great article on the subject from Google:  Upload and store your files in the cloud with Google Docs

Get in Sync - Get Syncback and automate your backups. Read all about it here - Click here for the cnet review and to download it.

Mirror you Hard Drive - Use Drobo to mirror your data onto another drive using RAID technology.
